Summer 2026
Visitors can continue to enjoy Alto Lake this summer while important restoration work takes place on the burned slopes below the lake. Fishing remains open throughout the project, although some recreation areas will be temporarily unavailable.
Recovery work related to the South Fork Fire began in mid-May and is expected to continue through the end of August 2026. During this time, trails below the Alto Lake dam, including the Alto Lake Disc Golf Course, are temporarily closed while crews complete erosion control and landscape restoration.
The project includes contour felling of dead trees, woody debris removal, mastication (forestry mulching), and other erosion control measures designed to stabilize burned hillsides, slow stormwater runoff, encourage new vegetation, and improve wildlife habitat.
Visitors may see restoration crews and equipment working below the dam during their visit. These temporary closures allow work to be completed safely while helping protect Alto Lake and the surrounding landscape following the South Fork Fire.
While portions of the recreation area are temporarily closed, Alto Lake continues to offer fishing, picnic areas, playgrounds, beautiful mountain scenery, and a peaceful setting for enjoying the outdoors.
We appreciate your patience as this important recovery work helps preserve one of Ruidoso’s most popular outdoor destinations for years to come.
Visitors are encouraged to check the Alto Lake webpage for the latest information before planning their visit.
